Early Life and Career Beginning
Born Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr. on June 26, 1970, in Hollis, Queens, New York, Irv Gotti grew up surrounded by hip-hop culture. His passion for music led him to start as a DJ under the name DJ Irv. He quickly gained recognition in the mid-1990s when he produced "Can I Live" for Jay-Z's debut album Reasonable Doubt (1996), marking his entry into the mainstream music industry.
The Rise of Murder Inc. Records
In 1999, Irv Gotti co-founded Murder Inc. Records alongside his brother Chris Lorenzo. The label became one of the most dominant forces in hip-hop and R&B in the early 2000s, thanks to its signature blend of melodic rap and street anthems. The label’s first major success came with Ja Rule’s debut album Venni Vetti Vecci (1999), featuring the hit single "Holla Holla."
Gotti's production and business acumen helped launch the careers of multiple artists, including Ashanti, who became a household name with chart-topping hits like "Foolish" and "Always on Time" (with Ja Rule). He also collaborated with Jennifer Lopez, producing remixes for her tracks "I'm Real" and "Ain’t It Funny," which dominated the Billboard Hot 100.
Legal Challenges and Industry Setbacks
In 2003, Murder Inc. faced a major legal battle when federal authorities accused Gotti and his label of money laundering due to alleged connections with drug kingpin Kenneth "Supreme" McGriff. After a lengthy trial, Gotti and his team were acquitted in 2005, but the controversy took a toll on the label's reputation and business operations. In an effort to rebuild, he rebranded the company as The Inc.
Venturing Into Television and Entrepreneurship
Despite industry challenges, Gotti continued evolving. He transitioned into television, creating the BET series Tales, which brought hip-hop lyrics to life through cinematic storytelling. He also remained involved in music, producing projects and mentoring up-and-coming artists.
Health Struggles and Passing
Over the years, Gotti battled diabetes and other health complications. In early 2024, he suffered a stroke, and on February 5, 2025, he passed away due to complications from multiple strokes. His death marked the loss of a pioneering figure in hip-hop.
Legacy and Impact
Irv Gotti’s contributions to the music industry reshaped hip-hop and R&B, bringing a new wave of storytelling and melody-driven rap. His work with Ja Rule, Ashanti, and other artists defined an era of early 2000s music, and his legacy continues to inspire future generations of producers, executives, and artists.
